Is it conceivable to power a ship with the stars themselves? Are alien lifeforms like the dust devil and the blue “Space” aliens really evolutionary possibilities? And how does faster-than-light travel work? This week on the GateWorld Podcast we examine the science of Stargate Universe, with a special guest expert on hand to discuss how the television series lines up with real-world science. Astronomer and science fiction writer Diane Turnshek joins David and Darren to talk about all this, and more.
It’s the first of our final three shows of the summer! Stay tuned next week for our discussion of Ancient history, followed by the 100th Episode Bash on August 4.

The ‘Rancor’ creature was even more alien that our tall blue friends. How ironic that she criticized that more. We don’t know the whole part of those ‘dust’ aliens reproductive cycles. As for the aliens from ‘Water’. For all we know they used water along with dead skin and hair remnants from the crew to reproduce, or even the ship’s power. It was a mystery. Destiny did have a repository for the energy from a star, its energy banks. Both the force field and the hull were protecting the inside. We have no idea how the shields or the material… Read more »
Thanks – enjoyed the podcast as always. It’s always fun with scifi science. Guest was good. I’m more of a language and history person myself (that’s why I love Daniel Jackson and would have liked more of the history/language in that series – it was often cut short by O’Neill :) Anyhow, next podcast with Ancient History sounds right up my street – will you talk about SG Ancient History in relation to “our ancient history”, e.g. Merlin, etc.? p.s any suggestion how I will cope with any new podcasts for 6 weeks :) – Then again, I might need… Read more »
between SGU and former SG shows, Ancient History, there is no difference
I was probably not very clear. Would love if the podcast related Fictional Ancient’s history to ‘Real word’ history maybe to discuss if SG’s take on history is ‘realistic’ in the same way as SG’s/Scifi’s take on technology is ‘realistic’ :) I mean, is it believable (or just fun to imagine) that Merlin came from Pegasus galaxy… I think it’s fun and sometimes interesting to think like this (Sometimes SG, maybe more SG1, is a bit ‘Erich von Däniken’ everything mythological/history on Earth is from the stars. But of course in SG1 this is also in reverse, people on other… Read more »
