THE STARGATE PRIMER

Welcome to the Stargate universe! This primer is tailor-made for new viewers, especially those who are joining our adventure for Season Nine of SG-1 and Season Two of Stargate Atlantis.
So what is Stargate? If you've made it this far, you probably already know part of that answer! Stargate SG-1 is one of today's finest science fiction series, combining entertaining stories and continuity with compelling, three-dimentional characters, and great special effects. Originally starring Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver), the show aired for five years on Showtime (1997 to 2002), then moved to The SCI FI Channel in the U.S. in starting with Season Six. The show has also aired in nationwide syndication since 1998, where episodes air a little more than a year after they've played on cable.
The show also airs throughout the world, and is especially popular in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, and Australia. It's been a ratings winner everywhere it airs, and was The SCI FI Channel's highest-rated series until the premiere of Stargate Atlantis in 2004 (which was, in turn, unseated by Battlestar Galactica in 2005). Now entering its ninth season, Stargate SG-1 ties The X-Files as the longest-running science fiction series in U.S. television history.
GateWorld's Stargate Primer will give you a crash-course on who these people are, what they're doing each week, and what's happened in the story so far. When you are done, you'll be all ready to join us for Season Nine of SG-1 and Season Two of Atlantis on SCI FI! Season Nine promises to be a great place to jump into Stargate, with new lead characters and a new enemy about to be introduced.
Be warned that spoilers abound in this primer. We'll tell you all about the major plot and character developments of the show's first eight seasons to catch you up, and give you a hint or two about what's coming up this year. If you'd rather not know all this, turn back now! SCI FI also airs previous years of Stargate SG-1 in 4-hour blocks every Monday night, as well as weeknights at 6 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. And
Season Eight will begin in syndication for the first time in September, 2005.
