BACK-UPS INDEED.
Happy New Year! It's been quite a couple of weeks for me. A week before Christmas, my hard drive decided it'd had enough. Nope, it wasn't anywhere near full ...
The drive rapidly and unexpectedly became corrupted, and even after multiple formats I was unable to reinstall Windows 98. After three days of working with it, I broke down and called Dell technical support. They told me the physical drive was bad, and would have to be replaced.
Thank God for warranties!
My new drive arrived here in Chicago less than an hour after I left for vacation – a whirlwind eight days in Oregon and Washington. I installed it upon returning home ... and still couldn't get the darn thing to work!
Another two and a half hours on the phone (most of which was on hold, thank you very much) with Dell found the problem: the cable that connects the drive to the motherboard was bad. An easy swap, and I'm back online ... and still reinstalling software.
So, Darren has learned the fine lesson of making back-ups. I lost months of work on another web site I hoped to re-launch this winter, a bit of GateWorld stuff (including three new articles for Debra's GATECON feature), weeks of updates to a book I am outlining, and the first chapter or two of another book I am writing.
Back-ups indeed.
It'll take me a few more days to get my feet under me, but I hope to be rolling strong again in order to finish the episode analysis and review for the return of new Season Four episodes this Friday. We've also got Ed's next "Stargate Mythology" column coming up, plus additions to the Characters and Goa'uld sections, and those missing Season One episode analyses!
What a way to start out the year. I just hope it ends better than it began.
Darren
