'GENE RODDENBERRY'S ANDROMEDA'
Did you catch last week's premiere of the newest sci-fi series to hit syndication, "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda?" Here in Chicago we're about a week and a half behind the rest of the country, and just saw the first episode this past weekend. Is it the next "Star Trek?" Naaa. Is it worth watching? Yeah, for now.
Granted, you can't judge any show by one episode - and especially not by the pilot. How well does "Encounter at Farpoint" represent Star Trek: The Next Generation? Or "Children of the Gods" for SG-1? So give Andromeda some time to find it's groove. Then we'll see if it's a winner or not.
The writing is decent, the production values are about what you'd expect for syndication (good, not great), the characters are a mixture of interesting and oh-my-goodness-get-off-my-screen-now, and the acting is good. It's a little more cartoony than I'd like.
Did you catch Major Coburn kicking Hercules butt? Yep, the highlight of the Andromeda premiere was Captain Dylan Hunt's (Kevin Sorbo) trecherous Nietzchean first officer, played by Steve Bacic (Major Coburn on Stargate SG-1 -- he was in Season Three's "Forever in a Day" and "Maternal Instinct," and most recently in Season Four's "The First Ones"). Unfortunately, the good major didn't survive the first 30 minutes. We can only hope that future Nietzcheans on the show will be this cool.
(Executive producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe lucked out when the TV censors didn't pick up on the props used for High Guard weapons. Andromeda may have gotten a TV-MA rating! Those guns made me feel dirty.)
