TOO EARLY FOR SEASON FIVE?
Is it too early to talk about Season Five?
I know I'm excited. Stargate SG-1 just keeps getting better and better. We are finally getting to the point where the Stargate universe is enormous, and well-defined. Earth has allies. Earth has enemies. Earth has technology. And Earth has conflict at home.
I'd say that the first year of your average sci-fi show is a matter of laying the groundwork and setting the rules. The second is a year of fine-tuning and deciding what elements will be important to the show. The third year is when the average show hits its stride, and starts telling great stories based on the established universe. The fourth year can make or break a show - the best series have some of their best episodes ever during Season Four.
What is the fifth year? The foundation has been layed and built upon. The characters and their relationships with one another have been developed. The universe is well-established. It's time for the writers and producers to accomplish whatever it is they set out to do.
Now, Stargate SG-1 is most certainly ahead of the curve. This show hit its stride in Season Two, and has been building its universe non-stop over the last four years.
Just look at what the first half of Season Four has brought us: Tanith. Osiris. Asgard appreciation. Russians. And if you've seen "The Serpent's Venom," you know that just scratches the surface.
Stargate SG-1 continues to be one of the best science fiction shows in the history of television -- and will continue to do so. Why? Because of its mythology. It started with a world of true-life mythology to build on, and has never stopped developing and adapting those ideas.
Whereas other shows establish a premise early on an then see if they can fill seven years worth of stories, SG-1 builds on its own history with each episode, constantly expanding the range of its storytelling.
Yep, Season Five is going to be good. And only seven months to go ...
