Letters to the Editor
NOVEMBER 2003

With the debut of Stargate Atlantis set for June, 2004, fans everywhere are wondering: Will a spin-off series take the young franchise to new hights, or just ruin a good thing? We asked GateWorld readers to weigh in with their opinions, and here you'll find a few choice responses. It was a huge response! Though some fans are cautious about a spin-off, the vast majority of people who wrote in are supportive and anxious to see the Stargate universe expand.

We also asked GateWorld visitors just how they felt about Stargate as an on-going franchise. So far 48 percent are enthusiastic about Atlantis, and another 34 percent are hopeful. A total of 17 percent have negative inclinations about the thing. Thanks to everyone who wrote in, and who voted! - Darren

Continuing the Stargate franchise is far too important to worry about what a few SG-1 fans think! The upcoming production Atlantis is a good sign that the Stargate franchise will not wither and die. Even though SG-1 reruns will always be around, new blood can take the Stargate world to new heights.

No other show currently airing or in reruns captures my imagination the way Stargate SG-1 does. Any addition to this already rich canvass of science fiction adventure is exciting. I put my faith in the hope that Atlantis will remain true to the Stargate name and uphold the rich history already in the books. The bar has been set high; let's hope Atlantis is up to the challenge! May the adventure begin.

Phil

Stargate has an incredible potential to outlast Star Trek for decades to come; but it must be done with considerable care, or everyone but the hardcore fans will lose interest. I have the highest of hopes for Stargate Atlantis, and I pray that The Powers That Be really have the right idea under their feet. If not, the show will founder.

The_Eager_Beaver

I'm one of the "cautiously optimistic" fans. If Stargate Atlantis has good writers, directors and actors, I'm all for exploring more of the Stargate universe. On the other hand, the fifth "Star Trek" movie comes to mind ...

Liz Waldrip

I can't wait for Atlantis! I can't see anything wrong with more Stargate action. It's the best news I've heard since Daniel Jackson returning for Season Seven. Yeah!

David Schmaltz

I'm skeptically cautious about this new spin-off. I think I'm afraid of it falling into the same path of the cartoon. Stargate is not big enough to have a spin-off at this stage, and I'm not sure about who they will cast. You can't beat SG-1!

I think I will give a look into Atlantis, but I don't think it will beat its predecessor. Only fans of Stargate will watch it and probably only half of the fans will take an interest, but as time wears on I think I will begin to get more exited about the situation.

johntheone

My main interest is in Stargate SG-1, which has a great team of actors and a quality team of writers. I would love to see it continue for as long as the actors wish to work on it.

Atlantis could enhance Stargate SG-1 or it could detract from it, depending on the resources that are made available to each series. I will certainly give it a fair chance when it comes to viewing; after all, it does come from the same team as that which brings us Stargate SG-1! However, the one situation I would not want to see is Atlantis being promoted to the detriment of Stargate SG-1 simply because it is new.

Pam

I love the idea of Stargate Atlantis! More power to the franchise, I say. While SG-1 will always have a special place in my heart as a series populated by great characters, inventive plots, and a wonderfully fleshed-out universe, the idea of having another series to keep the fun flowing when SG-1 is no longer producing new episodes is fantastic news, and we should all be rejoicing! The best news in a long time!

Andrew G

To me this is great news. If Atlantis is made to the same standard as SG-1, I don't think anyone should worry too much. I know there are plenty of SG-1 fans who are worried that Atlantis will end up suffering the same fate as some of the Star Trek spin-offs. I just feel I have to point out that not all spin-offs suck!

We should give Atlantis a chance. Just because it's a spin-off doesn't mean it'll suck! Give it a chance ... it might be great!

Jay Felger
NOVEMBER 20, 2003

To celebrate the very unofficial "Jay Felger Week" at GateWorld, we asked Gate News readers just what they thought about the S.G.C.'s lovable yet not-so-mildly irritating scientist. Here's a few choice reponses! Thanks to everyone who wrote in. - Darren

To paraphrase Pogo: "I have seen the Felger, and he is us." Whether we claim to be like Jay or not, we all know someone like him. He's the Trekkie who loves the show, but hates the writers because he knows the tech better than they do. Right or wrong, he's convinced that he could write a better episode than Brannon Braga could ever conceive.
Felger shows that The Powers That Be at our favorite show know us and like us (unlike that other franchise). The character, his attitudes and actions are an inside joke between we, the fans, and the writers and producers. (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more.)

John Miller

Jay Felger is a pretty lame comic relief character that every single science fiction show puts into their series at one time or another. Barclay in Star Trek: TNG, and Londo's assistant in Babylon 5 are just two examples.

Stargate, when it is done seriously, is one of the greatest sci-fi shows that there has ever been. Moronic comic characters like Felger only serve to distract us from great stories, with their lame and very old antics.

Andrew Meyers

The Felger character gives some good comic relief and is really hilarious when he and Jack play off each other. It's nice to have a show full of my favorite interests: space travel, ancient civilizations, etc., and still have some comedy, too.

Beverly Fox

In my opinion Felger is the worst character introduced to Stargate -- aside from his friend (the annoying Star Trek doctor) and Martin Lloyd. Stargate could really do without Disney cheese and should get back on track with drama and good characters that advance the Stargate mythos, and not make it unbearable.

Michael Petel

Of course Jay is somewhat annoying, but in the total geeky, "Don't ya just love him?" sense. And he is a breath of fresh air, although not a much needed one. Of course you have to feel for Carter, who has a knack for attracting the wrong kind of men. First McKay, now Felger. To see reccuring characters such as Felger, McKay and Maybourne return will be welcome to grace my screen ... at least when Season Eight eventually airs here in the U.K.

Sara Lou

I loved Jay Felger in "The Other Guys." He added a lot of humor and a different perspective to the show. However, he became too over-the-top in "Avenger 2.0." I think it was better when he had Coombs there to balance him out a little. I love his interactions with Sam and his whole SG-1 figurine collection, which seems like a nod to some of us obsessed fans out there. So even though he's a great character, we've probably seen enough of Felger.

Jolinarsam

In regards to Jay Felger either coming back in Season Eight or just being sucked into the nearest black hole, I find that I'm in favor of the latter option. I find Jay to be quite a bit overbearing and annoying. His overly-done crush on Sam, while meant to cause a few laughs, just grated on my nerves, like chalk squeaking on a chalkboard.

Kim W.

The Felger episodes are the greatest! I recorded them and watch them over and over. We need Jay to save us from those rascally Goa'uld! Ditto for Coombs and Chloe.

DaleZ

I don't think a black hole is really suitable for Felger. Maybe if he was just posessed by a Goa'uld and shot by Sam ...

Nevdka

Personally, I like Felger. It's a welcome relief from having Jack be the comic relief and butt of all the jokes. It also proves that you can be really, really smart and really, really dumb at the same time. He's so in awe of SG-1 that his thumbs grow thumbs when he's around them. He's sort of the every fan, fantasizing himself in all sorts of scenarios with his heroes. I'd love another Felger episode.
