S.G.C. GATE ROOM.

WEIR: Sending ships here to attack us is an act of war, and a foolish one at that, given what our defenses are capable of.

OSHU: My lord did not order such action.

JACKSON: Then undo it. Tell the System Lords to call the ship back.

AMATERASU: The decision they have made is one of desperation, forced upon them by your unwillingness to help. Persuading them to change course can only be done in person.

OSHU: With a full Council vote.

WEIR: Even if I did believe you, all good faith is out the window at this point. You're our prisoners. Take them away! (Guards escort them out of the Gate room.)

THOR'S SHIP. The ship exits hyperspace at Orilla. An Asgard appears on the view screen.

PENEGAL: Greetings, Thor.

THOR: Greetings. Teal'c, this is Penegal of the Asgard High Council.

PENEGAL: I regret to report that the debris from the destroyed Replicator ship cannot be contained. We were unable to prevent countless Replicator blocks from raining down on Orilla. They have already begun replicating and infesting our systems. Control of the city is in jeopardy.

TEAL'C: Should you not consider evacuating your people?

PENEGAL: That is no longer possible.

THOR: There are too many. We carried numerous stored minds aboard the computers of our ships when we fled our homeworld. When Orilla was finally found, we were able to place those minds into cloned bodies so that we could build our new colony.

PENEGAL: The Replicators have already infected systems needed to save those minds. If we lose this battle, they will perish along with their bodies, taking with them the hopes of the Asgard race.

THOR: Orilla is the last chance of ever rebuilding our empire.

TEAL'C: Then we must find a way to save it.

EARTH. PROMETHEUS. Prometheus is orbiting the Earth. A female officer occupies the chair on the bridge formerly held by Major Gant. Colonel Pendergast is in the big chair.

OFFICER: Sir, sensors are detecting an alien vessel. It exited hyperspace fourteen thousand kilometers out, eight degrees starboard.

PENDERGAST: Designation.

OFFICER: None yet, sir. Vessel is the size of a Goa'uld mothership, closing fast. Visual range in six seconds.

PENDERGAST: Hold your position. Prepare to fire.

OFFICER: Four, three, two, one.

PENDERGAST: On screen, maximum magnification. Open a channel -- broadcast on all frequencies and translate into Goa'uld.

OFFICER: Yes, sir.

PENDERGAST: This is Colonel Lionel Pendergast of the United States Air Force Prometheus. Unidentified vessel, failure to reply will constitute an act of aggression and we will respond with the full force of our weapons. (Teal'c appears on the view screen.)

TEAL'C: That will be unnecessary. (Pendergast and his crew grin in relief.)

OFFICER: Teal'c.

TEAL'C: I offer greetings from Thor, the Supreme Commander of the Asgard fleet. We are aboard the Daniel Jackson.

S.G.C. BRIEFING ROOM. The System Lords are under guard. Doctor Weir comes in.

WEIR: I have just received word that the Asgard have arrived. They want to witness the demonstration of our new Ancient defense technology that you have forced us into. There's still time to call off the attack.

AMATERASU: We would also like to witness the demonstration. (Daniel comes up from the Control Room.)

JACKSON: Your ship isn't coming. It was destroyed en route by Baal. The collective forces of the System Lords are bowing, and you're losing the war.

YU: And so are you. (A transporter beam envelops Daniel and he appears on ...)

THOR'S SHIP.

JACKSON (after a moment): Hey guys!

THOR: Our new colony is in grave jeopardy. The Replicators escaped from the time dilation device and are threatening to destroy the Asgard.

JACKSON: OK, so what can we do?

TEAL'C: Thor believes the Ancient knowledge stored in O'Neill's mind may be the key to defeating the Replicators once and for all.

JACKSON: Jack's frozen down in Antarc ... (Thor operates a control and Jack's body appears in a stasis capsule on the bridge.) ... tica. (He walks over and looks down at Jack, then turns to Teal'c.) As I was saying, where's Sam?

TEAL'C: She was captured by the Replicators. Their ship was destroyed.

BEDROOM. Sam wakes up in a pretty sunlit bedroom. After looking around in confusion, she sits up, and we see that she has long hair and is wearing a nightdress. She gets out of bed and walks across to the mirror on the closet door, staring at herself in disbelief.

KITCHEN. Sam, now dressed in slacks and a short-sleeved shirt, comes downstairs into the kitchen and looks around.

OUTDOORS. Now wearing a coat over her clothes, Sam comes out and investigates. A dog comes over to greet her and she strokes it before walking on. Horses can be heard neighing nearby. She walks over to where a pony is grazing in a paddock by a barn. She hears somebody coming out of the barn and turns to look. It's Pete.

SHANAHAN: Hey, sleepyhead! Didn't think you'd ever get up! It was kinda a long night, huh?! (He nudges her as he walks past her.)

CARTER (bewildered): Pete.

SHANAHAN: What's up? Are you OK? Something wrong?

CARTER: Yes! Everything!

SHANAHAN: What do you mean?

CARTER (indicating around her): This! What are you doing here? What am I doing here?! Where the hell is here?!

SHANAHAN(chuckling): That was good. You had me -- you really had me! Of course, I've been up since five feeding the pigs and chickens.

CARTER: No, Pete, honestly, I don't ...

SHANAHAN: What? You don't what?

CARTER: Think this is real.

SHANAHAN(after looking at her for a moment): You hungry? I'm starving. C'mon, we'll go inside, I'll whip you up some pancakes.

CARTER: You don't understand. This isn't happening. The last thing I remember, I was on board a Replicator ship. This is just another way of screwing with my mind.

SHANAHAN: OK, here's what I got. This is not S.G.C., it's Montana. Nothing weird happens here -- not like you're used to. A year ago you left the Stargate program because of mental stress, and because you wanted to be with me and a farm full of really stinky animals. Since then you've been seeing a shrink because you can't seem to shake the nightmares. You've had a bad one, OK? That's it. (He kisses her.) Did that feel real?

CARTER: Yes.

SHANAHAN: Then snap out of it. OK, pancakes, or do I have to call the doctor?

CARTER: I am kinda hungry.

SHANAHAN: Good. (He grins.) C'mon.

THOR'S SHIP - THE DANIEL JACKSON. The ship is in hyperspace on its way back to Orilla. Thor walks towards the stasis capsule.

JACKSON: What are you gonna do?

THOR: I'm going to merge O'Neill's mind with the ship's computer.

JACKSON: To do that, you're gonna have to defrost him first, right? I bring this up because he was near death when we froze him.

THOR: Hopefully the pod will sustain his life.

JACKSON: 'Hopefully'?!

THOR: What other choice do we have?

JACKSON: Well can't you just save him, like the last time this happened? Just wipe the Ancient knowledge from his mind.

THOR: And lose any chance of finding a means to defeat the Replicators.

JACKSON: You have no right to risk his life.

TEAL'C: I believe O'Neill would approve.

JACKSON: We can't make that choice for him, no matter what's at stake. Can't you just extract the Ancient information into the ship's computer? Then we can all benefit from it, even learn how to use the Ancient weapons on Earth.

THOR: You cannot even begin to comprehend the extent of what was unfolding in O'Neill's mind. Our scientists, long ago, extracted parts of the Ancient library of knowledge and learned much from it. But we have been studying it for as long as I can remember, and we have barely scratched the surface.

JACKSON: So we'd be looking for a needle in a haystack.

THOR: A haystack of infinite size.

JACKSON: That's big.

THOR: I am hoping O'Neill's conscious mind can provide us with a direct conduit to the information we need.

S.G.C. OSHU'S CELL. Doctor Weir comes in.

WEIR: You requested to see me?

OSHU: You must let us go.

WEIR: I don't have to do anything at this point. If that's what ... (she turns away).

OSHU: If your attempt is to extract information from us, you should know I will die before I say anything, and nothing my master says can be trusted.

WEIR: Look, no-one's decided what to do with you.

OSHU: Anubis was over-confident, and he still needed the bulk of his armada to keep the System Lords at bay. The fleet he used to attack Earth was small compared to that which Baal will command should he defeat the System Lords. He will rule the galaxy. No weapons will be powerful enough to stop him.

WEIR: What would you have me do?

OSHU: Free us to fight, or -- if we must -- die with honor.

THE DANIEL JACKSON.

THOR: He is not well.

JACKSON: I told you.

THOR: The process of interfacing his mind is complex.

O'NEILL'S VOICE (over comms): Hello. Testing, testing. One, two. One, two, one, two, testing. Helloooo? Is this thing on?

JACKSON: Jack?

THOR: O'Neill, can you hear us?

O'NEILL'S VOICE: Hey! Hey, guys! What's goin' on?

THOR: Your mind has been interfaced with the Daniel Jackson.

O'NEILL: What?

JACKSON: (Disbelieving) What?!

TEAL'C: The name of Thor's ship is Daniel Jackson. (Daniel looks aghast.)

THOR: All the information in the ship's computer is available to you.

O'NEILL'S VOICE: Ah, right, here we go. Ah, this is cool. I can pretty much do anything I want, can't I? (The lights go on and off several times.)

THOR: O'Neill.

O'NEILL'S VOICE: What? Oh. Sorry. (The lights come back on.)

THOR: If you wish, you may appear to us as a hologram. (Even before he finishes speaking, a hologram of Jack appears.)

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: Uh!

JACKSON: You OK?

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: It's a little weird. But yeah, I'm OK.

JACKSON: At least you're not speaking Ancient.

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: There's that.

THOR: Actually, the computer is translating.

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: Ah. (He walks over to the stasis capsule and looks down at himself.) I've never looked better.

THOR: There is not much time, O'Neill.

TEAL'C: Thor's planet ...

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: I know. Ship's log.

THOR: Can you help with the Replicators?

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: Already on it.

JACKSON: Jack ...

O'NEILL'S HOLOGRAM: Daniel, the computer recorded the whole conversation. Thanks for your concern. Talk amongst yourselves. (The hologram disappears.)

S.G.C. CAMULUS' CELL. Camulus is sitting on the bed. Weir walks in.

WEIR: I've discussed the situation with my superiors -- we've decided to let you all go.

CAMULUS: I must admit, that comes as a surprise.

WEIR: Well, it seems we haven't had much success interrogating Goa'ulds in the past. It was made apparent to me you're much more use to us fighting Baal. (She turns to leave.)

CAMULUS: Doctor Weir.

WEIR: You know my name.

CAMULUS (standing): This may come as a surprise to you.

WEIR: Oh, I'm not sure anything can surprise me at this point.

CAMULUS: I wish to request asylum.

WEIR: Well, seems I was wrong again.

CAMULUS: My fleet was destroyed before I came here -- of the many, among the first to fall. I have nothing left with which to fight. The only thing waiting for me through the Stargate is shame and torture. So it is not true that I would be more useful to you out there. Perhaps I could be of some use to you here.

MONTANA FARMHOUSE. Sam and Pete are finishing breakfast.

CARTER: Thanks. That was great. (Pete picks up the plates and takes them to the sink.) Tasted very real.

SHANAHAN: Hey, I was thinking we could go into town tonight -- have dinner, see a movie.

CARTER: Come on, you can't really expect me to just play along.

SHANAHAN(angrily throwing the frying pan across the room and making Sam jump): I gave up my job for this! I gave up my life for you!

CARTER: See, that is definitely not Pete.

SHANAHAN: How patient do you expect me to be?

CARTER: Nothing you say is gonna convince me. I know who you are, I just don't understand why. What do you want from me? Why are you doing this? (Pete walks towards her and, as he does, transforms into Fifth.)

FIFTH: Because I love you. (He smiles sweetly.)

THE DANIEL JACKSON. Thor and Teal'c are looking at a monitor.

TEAL'C: What is it?

THOR: I am unsure. It seems O'Neill's mind is building something, virtually, in conjunction with the ship's computer. (He and the others look at the stasis capsule.) I do not know how much longer his life can be sustained.

JACKSON: Jack, can you hear me? (Alarms go off.)

THOR: I must revive him now.

O'NEILL'S VOICE: Wait! Not yet! (Thor operates controls which remove the Ancient knowledge from Jack's brain, then revive him. The lid of the stasis capsule slides open and Jack opens his eyes and immediately lifts his hand to his head.)

O'NEILL: Oy! What a headache!

JACKSON: Take it easy. You've been through a lot. (Jack takes his hand away from his head and looks at Daniel, then realizes that he's on an Asgard ship.)

O'NEILL: What now?!

JACKSON: Er, what's the last thing you remember?

O'NEILL (sitting up with Daniel's help): Getting my head sucked by one of those damned Ancient head-suckers. And something about twins. (He looks at Teal'c.) Teal'c -- what's with the hair?

THOR: O'Neill.

O'NEILL: Thor. You got aspirin?

THOR: You should feel better momentarily and your memory will slowly return. (Jack nods, then looks at Teal'c again.)

O'NEILL: Teal'c -- what's with the hair? (Teal'c opens his mouth but Thor interrupts.)

THOR: The specifications for the device you created remain in the computer. I believe I can synthesize it. (The device appears on the bridge.)

O'NEILL: Sweet. What is it?

JACKSON: We don't know, but you made it.

O'NEILL: No.

JACKSON: Yes.

O'NEILL: No.

JACKSON: Yes.

O'NEILL: No.

JACKSON: Yes.

THOR: You accessed the Ancient knowledge in your mind and instructed the ship's computer to design it.

O'NEILL: Doesn't mean I know what it is.

THOR: It was doubtful at best that he would remember. The knowledge of the Ancients is gone.

O'NEILL: Alright, let me have a look. (He climbs out of the stasis capsule but his legs buckle. Daniel and Teal'c support him on either side.) Ah, got legs. I've got it, I've got it. (His legs become steadier as he shakes them out. He walks closer to the device and looks at it, then taps part of it.) Yeah. I got nothing. (The ship comes out of hyperspace. Penegal appears on the view screen, though the image is broken up with static.)

THOR: Penegal, I am relieved you are still able to communicate.

PENEGAL: It may not last long. Were you able to procure a means of fighting the Replicators?

THOR: Possibly. It still requires more research.

PENEGAL: You should know those infesting the colony are behaving in an organized fashion unlike any Replicators we have encountered before.

THOR: Perhaps they are being controlled by a human-form leader who has yet to reveal itself.

JACKSON: If a human-form Replicator survived, it's possible Sam survived too, isn't it?

THOR: It is also possible the old-version Replicators created a new human form to lead them as before.

JACKSON: Yeah, but there's a chance. Can you scan the planet for life signs?

PENEGAL: We already have. There are none. (His transmission breaks up and disappears.)

THOR: Penegal, can you hear me? (No response.) We have lost contact.

MONTANA FARMHOUSE.

CARTER: Did you really think you could convince me that this illusion was my life? That I would just accept it?

FIFTH: If it was something you wanted badly enough in your mind.

CARTER: Is that why you tortured me for so long? So I would want this as an alternative?

FIFTH: No, I tortured you because I was mad. Why do you think I hated you so much for what you did to me? From the first moment we met, when you let me inside your mind, I saw you like no-one else ever could.

CARTER: Human emotions can be very overwhelming. The fact that you feel anything at all is a miracle. It makes you very special. FIFTH (smiling): I'm glad you see that.

CARTER: No, you don't understand. I could never be happy this way. FIFTH (losing the smile): Then you will be unhappy for a very long time. (We see where Sam really is -- in a Replicator facility, held against the wall by Replicator blocks covering almost her entire body. Only her head is free, and she is staring off into space as she lives the fantasy that Fifth has created for her. Near her head, Replicator bugs stand guard.)

S.G.C. GATE ROOM. The Gate is open. Doctor Weir stands at the foot of the ramp as Yu, Oshu and Amaterasu come in and walk up the ramp. Oshu turns his head and nods slightly to Weir in acknowledgement. She returns the nod. Amaterasu turns near the top of the ramp and walks back a few steps.

AMATERASU: Make sure Camulus knows he will forever be branded a traitor and a coward. (She turns and follows Yu and Oshu through the Gate.)

THE DANIEL JACKSON. Thor and Daniel are looking at the device that Jack built.

THOR: Most intriguing.

JACKSON: Can you make it work?

THOR: To be honest, I am still unsure of exactly what it is. (Daniel turns and looks at Jack. Jack shrugs.)

O'NEILL: Don't look at me. (Aegir appears on the view screen.)

AEGIR: Thor, this is Commander Aegir of the Valhalla. We have lost contact with the colony.

THOR: Aegir, communications are down. What have you to report?

AEGIR: We have located what appears to be the remains of a human-form Replicator floating in space. It obviously survived the destruction of its ship. By all appearances, it is currently inactive.

THOR: Transmit co-ordinates.

AEGIR: Use caution, Thor. (The transmission ends.)

JACKSON: What are you gonna do? (Thor walks over to the control console.)

O'NEILL: Where are you goin'?

THOR: I am going to transport it aboard.

O'NEILL: Why?

THOR: We must learn the location of the human form controlling the Replicators on the planet. (The human Replicator is beamed into the capsule. It's badly damaged, frozen in space. It's male, but isn't First or Third from "Unnatural Selection.")

JACKSON: Anybody recognize him?

TEAL'C: No.

O'NEILL: Is it dead?

THOR: Hopefully not completely. All Replicators are linked by a sophisticated communication system. If we can use this one to tap into the network, we will be able to see what any of the Replicators can see.

O'NEILL: And if he wakes up, this pod gonna hold him?

THOR: Probably not.

O'NEILL: Then perhaps there is no great wisdom in this.

THOR: I will transport it back into space if necessary, but we must take the risk. (Teal'c picks up his rifle from a nearby console and primes it.)

O'NEILL (pointing to Teal'c in agreement): Good. (He goes to the nearby crate and picks up two more rifles, handing one to Daniel. A distorted image appears on the computer screen.)

JACKSON: What's that?

THOR: Replicator communication data. I am searching for any references to other human forms.

MONTANA FARMHOUSE.

CARTER: You can't just keep me here forever.

FIFTH: Yes I can.

CARTER: No matter what you do, I will never, ever participate in this fantasy. (Fifth's head jerks up.) What?

THE DANIEL JACKSON. The picture on Thor's computer screen becomes a little clearer. Amid the distortion, Sam can be seen.

O'NEILL: Zoom in! (Thor zooms the picture in, and everyone can now clearly see Sam trapped in the Replicator blocks.)

JACKSON: That's Sam.

O'NEILL: Can you pinpoint her location?

THOR (calling up a map of Orilla): She is in a small Replicator structure on the planet. It is some distance outside the colony, near a rich vein of neutronium.

TEAL'C: They must be using it to create more human Replicators.

JACKSON: I thought the ship was destroyed.

THOR: At least one of the human Replicators must have separated from the main ship with Major Carter prior to exiting hyperspace. (The map disappears. Thor looks over to the human Replicator in the stasis capsule, which opens its eyes and looks over at the crew. Then all the damage on its body disappears.)

O'NEILL: Beam it out! (The transporter beam activates but the Replicator doesn't move.)

THOR: I am trying. It has made itself resistant.

The transporter beam shuts off, and all power goes down.

THOR: It has breached the internal barrier and interfaced with my ship's computer.

The lid of the capsule slides open and the Replicator climbs out. Jack, Teal'c and Daniel fire at it repeatedly but the Replicator takes all the blasts. It looks down at the bullet holes in its body, and all the holes heal. Teal'c throws himself at the Replicator but it throws him aside, snatching his rifle at the same time. It primes the rifle and aims at Daniel. As it fires, Daniel dives for cover. Meanwhile Jack runs over to the device he created. He picks it up, aims it at the Replicator and fires. The Replicator disintegrates into tiny bits, even smaller than the usual single blocks. Thor, who had ducked behind the control console, comes back up again and looks at Jack, who shrugs.

O'NEILL: Had to do somethin'. (The power comes back on. Teal'c walks over to the pile of crystals which are all that is left of the Replicator and retrieves his rifle.)

THOR: It seems to have permanently disrupted communication between the individual cells, rendering each one inert. We explored such a technology in the past with no success.

O'NEILL: Great. I mean, we can use this thing to whack the rest of those bugs?

THOR: Even better, O'Neill. Now that I have seen what the device does, I may be able to modify a larger version to broadcast a disruption wave over all of Orilla.

O'NEILL: Well, good. While you're doing that ...

THOR: I cannot transport you inside the Replicator ship on the planet. Their defenses prevent it. But I can get you close.

O'NEILL: Close is good.

THOR (sliding an Asgard stone towards Jack): Take this, so we may communicate.

ORILLA. FOREST. Jack, Daniel and Teal'c are beamed down. Jack has the Ancient Replicator-busting device. They make their way through the trees. A Replicator crawls down a tree behind Teal'c, who turns and blasts it into bits. More Replicators appear and Daniel and Teal'c fire at them until Jack can turn his device on them and obliterate them.

O'NEILL (shouting): Who's your daddy?! (Fifth appears.)

FIFTH: Stop! (The surviving Replicators scamper towards him.) If you harm me or any more of my brethren, I assure you Major Carter will die instantly. (SG-1 reluctantly lower their weapons.)

THE DANIEL JACKSON. The ship is now flying low over the planet.

THOR (over comms): O'Neill. I have successfully modified my ship to emit a massive disruption wave. (In the Orilla forest, Fifth has disappeared again.)

O'NEILL (into comms): Excellent! I knew you could do it.

THOR: It is fifty percent charged. If this works, you will have saved the Asgard once again.

O'NEILL: I'm real happy for you. I'm extremely proud, but we got a little bit of a problem down here. Fifth detected our approach and he claims he can kill Carter instantly.

THOR: O'Neill ...

O'NEILL: Hey, I know what you're gonna say. Her life was already sacrificed, and you've got your whole planet to worry about. But I've got problems too. (The sound of approaching Replicators can be heard.)

JACKSON: Jack ...

O'NEILL (to Thor over comms): Hang on a second. (To Daniel) What? (They all listen as the sound of approaching Replicators gets louder.)

JACKSON: This could be very bad. (Hundreds of bugs appear, both the small bugs and the big ones with wings, and converge on SG-1. As they reach the team, however, they rush straight past, all headed in the same direction.)

O'NEILL (watching them swarm past): What are they doing? It's like they're running away. Thor, are you ready yet?

THOR: What is happening, O'Neill?

O'NEILL: They're retreating!

THOR: You must stop them, O'Neill. The weapon is not yet ready. They cannot be allowed to escape. (His screen shows that the weapon is 75% charged.)

O'NEILL (to Daniel and Teal'c): Come on. (They head off after the Replicators.)

MONTANA FARMHOUSE. Sam comes out of the house looking for Fifth.

CARTER: I know you can hear me! What's happening? Fifth, where are you?! (Fifth appears out of nowhere behind her.)

FIFTH: We must leave.

CARTER: Why?

FIFTH: They've found a means to fight us.

CARTER: The Asgard? How?

FIFTH: The one you call O'Neill.

CARTER: What?!

FIFTH: So many of us are left in the city. We cannot wait for them. They will be killed.

CARTER: Don't expect me to be sorry.

FIFTH: Your friends. They are killing ... (We see Teal'c and Daniel firing their weapons at the fleeing Replicators, then Jack uses his Ancient weapon and hundreds of them crumble to nothing.)

FIFTH: ... trying to stop us.

CARTER: Trying to save me.

FIFTH: No. They do not care about you. I told them I would kill you if they did not stop. (His attention is distracted again as he receives input from the other Replicators.) (On Orilla, SG-1 finally catch up with the fleeing Replicators and find where they've been headed. They are building themselves into a Replicator-shaped (i.e. bug-shaped) spaceship.)

CARTER: Then why don't you kill me? You know why my friends won't stop just to save me?

FIFTH: No.

CARTER: Because they know, when it comes right down to it, I would rather be dead than be trapped like this forever. No matter what you feel for me, I will never love you back. Kill me if you want, but if you have even one shred of humanity in you, if you really truly love me, you'll let me go. (Fifth thinks about it, his eyes full of tears.)

ORILLA. The Replicator ship jumps into the air, curls its legs under itself and shoots into hyperspace. Moments later, Thor's Replicator-buster comes to full power and he activates it. The beam washes over the planet.

THOR (into comms): O'Neill, the weapon worked. Reports from the colony say all the remaining Replicators have been neutralized. While the ship did escape, at least we have an effective means of fighting them now.

O'NEILL: Yeah, well, at least there's that.

THOR: O'Neill -- I am detecting a fourth life sign in your immediate vicinity. (The team spread out looking for Sam.)

JACKSON (calling): Sam! Sam!

O'NEILL: Carter! (Teal'c finds Sam lying on the ground.)

TEAL'C: O'Neill! (Jack and Daniel run over as Teal'c helps her to sit up.)

O'NEILL: You OK?

CARTER (nodding): Glad to see you, sir.

O'NEILL: Likewise.

S.G.C. WEIR'S OFFICE. Elizabeth is packing her stuff into boxes. Jack comes to the door and knocks.

WEIR: Colonel, come in. How are you feeling?

O'NEILL: Not bad. Haven't had the urge to go anywhere or build anything lately.

WEIR: Well, you have been given a clean bill of health as far as the finest medical professionals on this planet are concerned.

O'NEILL: Well, what do they know?! (He sits down.)

WEIR: The President asked me to extend an invitation to you. Dinner at the White House.

O'NEILL: Do you know what they're having?

WEIR: I don't think I've had the chance to personally thank you yet.

O'NEILL: For what?

WEIR: You risk your life over and over, and ask for nothing in return.

O'NEILL: Well, don't be fooled. I'm makin' a list.

WEIR: Well I doubt very much there's anything that could properly repay you.

O'NEILL (looking at the boxes): Are you goin' somewhere?

WEIR: As a matter of fact, the President has asked me to supervise the research of the Ancient outpost. It's gonna be a bit of a delicate situation, given all the various international claims already being made on the site.

O'NEILL: Sounds right up your alley.

WEIR: Yeah, well, much more so than this job.

O'NEILL: Does that mean Hammond will be coming back?

WEIR: No. General Hammond is being promoted. He'll be overseeing all things relating to Earth's defense on behalf of the Pentagon and Washington -- the S.G.C., the 303 program, the Antarctic site. Unofficially it's being called "Homeworld Security."

O'NEILL: Any idea who we're gonna be stuck with?

WEIR: The Pentagon has convinced the President that there is one man who could run the S.G.C. and make it politically viable from an international perspective, despite the fact that he is part of the American military establishment.

O'NEILL: Do we know this ... shrub?

WEIR: Well, you know him rather well ... Brigadier General Jack O'Neill.

O'NEILL: Me?!

WEIR: Yeah, you.

O'NEILL: Brigadier ... (He pauses.) It's on my list.

WEIR: Congratulations.

O'NEILL: I should be clear -- (he stands) I'd like the promotion, pay cheque and the parking spot. But I don't really wanna be in charge of anything. No.

WEIR: Well, sadly, all those things kind of go together. So I guess you have some thinking to do.

O'NEILL (grimacing): I hate that.

S.G.C. DANIEL'S OFFICE. All of SG-1 are there.

JACKSON: Maybe you should break it down into the pros and the cons.

O'NEILL: I've spent my whole life sticking it to the man. If I do this, I'll be the man. I don't think I can be the man.

CARTER: You'll be inheriting a pretty big can of worms with the state of affairs out there.

TEAL'C: If Baal truly is on the verge of dominance of the System Lords, we face a formidable challenge ahead.

CARTER: Plus who knows where and when Fifth and the other Replicators will turn up.

JACKSON: Here on Earth we've never been under so much scrutiny as we will be now that so many governments know about the Stargate.

O'NEILL: I've never had a desk.

JACKSON: That's, a, uh ...

O'NEILL: Con.

DANIEL. Con.

CARTER: For the record, sir, you do have a desk. (Jack looks surprised.)

O'NEILL: I do?

JACKSON: On the flip side of the coin, there's the fact that nobody knows how this place should be run better than you.

O'NEILL: Why thank you, Daniel.

JACKSON: With a little guidance from your good friends and advisors, of course.

CARTER: If you don't take the job, we could end up with someone much worse. (Jack looks at her. She cringes.) OK, that didn't come out right.

TEAL'C: I, for one, will miss you accompanying us on our missions, O'Neill.

O'NEILL: Yeah, now, see, I'm not sure I'm ready to give that up either -- sitting back watching you guys go off and have all the fun.

JACKSON: Risking our lives in the face of grave danger ...

O'NEILL: Yeah, that.

CARTER: Well, I'm sure there'll be situations in which you can accompany us in the field, sir.

JACKSON: You'll be in charge -- you can do whatever you want.

O'NEILL (thoughtfully): I'll be able to do whatever I want. (Daniel, Sam and Teal'c look worried.)

CARTER: Within reason, sir.

S.G.C. GATE ROOM. The handover ceremony is taking place. Sam, Daniel and Teal'c are at the foot of the ramp, with other military personnel ranged across the floor under the Control Room. Elizabeth Weir walks up to the podium at the top of the ramp.

WEIR: Although my time here has been brief, it has been without a doubt indelible. I will remember every one of you, and I thank you all for your hard work. I'm not one for long goodbyes, so without further ado it is with great pleasure I introduce you to your new commanding officer, Brigadier General Jack O'Neill. (The side door opens and Jack, in his new uniform, walks in. Everyone comes to attention. Jack walks up the ramp to the podium as Elizabeth walks down to stand with the rest of SG-1.)

O'NEILL: At ease. You all know how much I love speeches, so I'll make this short. I wish I could say I didn't owe anything to anyone, but the truth is I wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for the courage and support of each and every one of you. I hope I can be as good a leader as we've had in the past, and as good as you deserve.

JACKSON: Hear, hear! (He starts to applaud. Everyone else joins in.)

O'NEILL: The other reason I took this job was so I could do really cool stuff like this: it is with great pride that my first order of business as commander of this base is the announcement of the promotion of Major Samantha Carter to Lieutenant Colonel.

(Applause. Sam looks delighted and embarrassed. Jack jerks his head at her, mouthing 'C'mere' at her. She walks up the ramp.) (The ceremony continues as Walter reads the commendation.)

WALTER: The President of the United States has placed special trust and confidence in the patriotism, integrity and abilities of Major Samantha Carter. Major Samantha Carter is promoted to the grade of Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force. (Jack has finished pinning on Sam's new insignia and they now salute each other.)

O'NEILL: Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter. (Applause.) Now, raise your right hand (she does so) and repeat after me: I, insert name.

CARTER: I, Samantha Carter ... (fade out)

REPLICATOR SHIP. The ship has now taken the form which it had earlier in the episode. Inside, Fifth stands and watches as a bunch of Replicator bugs swarm over a place on the wall.

FIFTH: Don't be afraid. I know the first moment of consciousness can be frightening. I will show you everything, share with you all I know. You have no idea how happy I am we were able to collect enough neutronium.

A naked human figure steps out from the wall and stands with its back to us. Fifth steps back and gasps at the sight of it. It is female, and has short blonde hair.

FIFTH: We have much time to share. We must search for a new home for our brethren to propagate. It will pass quickly for us, though. Soon enough, everyone will know. (He reaches out to touch its face.) Together, we cannot be stopped.

We finally see the face of the new human Replicator. It's an exact replica of Samantha Carter.
